VIDEO: Similar wound complication rates after TJR with betadine wash vs. vancomycin powder

DALLAS — Results showed betadine wash, vancomycin powder and betadine wash plus vancomycin powder had no differences in wound complication, superficial infection and deep periprosthetic joint infection rates after total joint replacement.

“This was a study evaluating betadine wash vs. vancomycin powder in the wound vs. betadine wash plus vancomycin powder in the wound vs. a saline controlled arm,” Ran Schwarzkopf, MD, MSc, professor of orthopedics at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, told Healio about results presented at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting. “The study ran for many years and at this point, we presented our data of 3 months infection wound complication rate. We showed no clinically significant difference between the four randomized arms in wound complications, local superficial infection and deep periprosthetic joint infection 3 months out from the date of surgery.”
