Key takeaways:

  • Of 509 patients with periprosthetic joint infection of the knee, about 20% met eligibility criteria for one-stage exchange.
  • Among ineligible patients, about 66% had more than one reason for being ineligible.

DALLAS — In this video, Nicholas A. Bedard, MD, discusses results that showed about 20% of patients with periprosthetic joint infections of the knee met eligibility criteria for one-stage exchange.

“The results of this study help us understand, in light of the increased excitement about one-stage exchange in the U.S., how many patients may be eligible, calls for the need to determine more robust eligibility criteria to help guide patient and surgeon decision-making and, more importantly, it helps us understand the limitations of retrospective data comparing these two techniques, given the significant selection bias between patients who undergo one-stage and two-stage in retrospective studies,” Bedard, of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, told Healio about results presented at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting.
