Key takeaways:

  • Patients with previous exposure to mesh glue dressing had an 8.1% rate of allergic contact dermatitis.
  • Repeat mesh glue dressing exposure yielded a 5.4-fold increased risk of allergic contact dermatitis.

DALLAS — In this video from the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting, Robert A. Burnett, MD, discussed results that showed repeat mesh glue dressing exposure yielded a fivefold increased risk of allergic dermatitis.

In a prospective cohort analysis of patients who underwent total hip, total knee or partial knee arthroplasty from August 2023 to May 2024, Burnett and colleagues found an 8.1% rate of allergic contact dermatitis among patients who had prior mesh glue dressing exposure vs. 1.9% rate of reaction among patients who were dressing naïve. According to multivariate analysis, patients with repeat mesh glue dressing exposure had a 5.4-fold increased risk for allergic contact dermatitis.

“All of these reactions were self-limited. However, surgeons should use measured caution when applying a mesh glue dressing for a second time,” Burnett, assistant professor at Rush University Medical Center, told Healio.
