Key takeaways:

  • Implant costs accounted for 44% of the variability in day-of-surgery cost for rotator cuff repair.
  • Average day-of-surgery cost was roughly $2,500.

SAN ANTONIO — In this video from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Annual Meeting, Allison Rao, MD, spoke about variability in day-of-surgery cost for rotator cuff repair.

Rao, assistant professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of Minnesota, and colleagues analyzed time-driven, activity-based costs for 246 patients (average age, 59.1 years) who underwent primary rotator cuff repair for isolated supraspinatus tears at a single center between 2016 and 2022.

“What we found was that the average day-of-surgery costing was around $2,500, but interestingly, implants were about $1,000 plus or minus $670. And that accounted for 44% of the total day-of-surgery costing,” Rao said. “Three-quarters of the variability came from implants alone.”

Rao noted no significant correlation between partial-thickness tears, the number of anchors used or total day-of-surgery cost with symptomatic retear at 2 years.
