Key takeaways:

  • Failed same-day discharge after total joint replacement may increase costs and risk of complications.
  • A same-day discharge protocol without formal physical therapy clearance may mitigate risks.

DALLAS — In this video, Sumon Nandi, MD, MBA, discussed results of a novel total joint arthroplasty discharge protocol that does not require formal physical therapy clearance for same-day discharge.

“Using our novel total joint replacement discharge protocol, patients were significantly more likely to go home the same day of surgery without any increased risk of adverse events,” Nandi, associate professor and chief of adult reconstruction of the department of orthopedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, told Healio about results presented at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting. “Care is optimized, complications were decreased, cost is decreased and OR throughput is maximized.”
