VIDEO: Regional anesthesia techniques yield conflicting data in outpatient arthroplasty
Key takeaways:
- Results showed periarticular injection may be linked to improved joint motion in knee and hip replacements.
- The speaker said more data are needed on the impact of regional anesthesia on outpatient arthroplasty.
PHILADELPHIA — In this video from the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting, Alberto E. Ardon, MD, FASA, discusses the impact of modern regional anesthesia techniques in outpatient arthroplasty.
“The results of our scoping review suggest that we need more data about the impact of regional anesthesia and outpatient arthroplasty, specifically with modern anesthetic techniques,” Ardon, an anesthesiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, told Healio.
He added that additional data are also needed regarding the impact of regional anesthesia on mobility outcomes, spinal anesthesia on pain control, periarticular injections on postoperative pain scores and peripheral nerve blocks on range of motion and physical therapy outcomes.
