Smith & Nephew announced the launch of its Orthopaedics for All initiative, a global advisory board to promote and inspire equity and inclusion for female orthopedic surgeons, according to a company press release.

“There is meaningful data that supports the case for increased diversity within medicine and more broadly the medical device industry,” Elga Lohler, chief human resource officer at Smith & Nephew, said in the release. “Our Orthopaedics for All global advisory board has been established to truly understand the needs of a more diverse customer group, so that we can build sustainable strategies that address rapidly evolving customer needs.”

The initiative is spearheaded by a global advisory board of 20 female key opinion leaders in orthopedic adult hip and knee reconstruction. According to the release, Orthopaedics for All aims to build equity, break biases and promote inclusion of people who want to pursue a career in orthopedics.

“Orthopaedics for All, to me, means giving everybody a voice in our field and direction on where we’re going in the future,” Jessica Hooper, MD, clinical assistant professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at Stanford Health Care and member of the advisory board for Orthopaedics for All, said in the release.
