The American Spine Registry announced a formal collaboration with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association and its Blue Distinction Centers for Spine Surgery on an aggregated patient, site and surgeon data initiative.
According to a press release, the American Spine Registry (ASR), a partnership between the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, will offer outcome data from consenting patients to be used by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association’s (BCBSA) Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) for Spine Surgery. The release noted data will be updated on a quarterly basis.
“The ASR is reducing the burden of data submission once again by helping those who want to seek and maintain BCBSA's specialty care designation,” Steven D. Glassman, MD, FAAOS, co-chair of the ASR executive committee, said in the release. “The new data submission pathway allows for organizations like BCBSA to seamlessly evaluate authorized, high-quality data. The process further advances the utility and transparency of registry outcomes data and keeps the future of patient care at the forefront,” Glassman said.
“The national BDC for Spine Surgery designation is given to hospitals and ASCs that meet a series of objective quality measures and demonstrate expertise in delivering specialty care,” Erin Barney, vice president of network solutions at the BCBSA, said in the release. “By collaborating with ASR, we gain access to valuable performance measure data from consenting participants. This data will be incorporated into our BDC designation evaluations and, in turn, support patients in identifying high-quality, cost-effective health care providers for their specific spine care needs.”
