VIDEO: Speaker discusses direct anterior vs. posterolateral robotic-assisted THA
Key takeaways:
- Both anterior and posterior THA yielded positive outcomes when performed with robotic guidance.
- Functional outcomes and dislocation rates for the procedures were similar at 3 months and 1 year.
SAN FRANCISCO — In this video from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Elizabeth B. Gausden, MD, discussed positive outcomes of robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty.
Gausden and colleagues compared outcomes between patients who received direct anterior vs. posterolateral THA with robotic assistance (Mako, Stryker).
“Overall, [we found] good outcomes with the primary THAs done with robotic guidance in this group of about 2,000 THAs,” Gausden said. “[We found] a low risk of dislocation whether you had an anterior or posterior approach,” she added.
“[The results were] consistent with the literature that perhaps the anterior approach gets you a faster functional outcome, but no difference once you hit 3 months, and certainly no difference once you hit the 1-year mark,” Gausden said.
