Key takeaways:

  • The arthroplasty group had slightly higher 90-day health care utilization rates vs. the osteosynthesis group.
  • The osteosynthesis group underwent reoperation at almost double the rate of the arthroplasty group.

SAN FRANCISCO — Results presented here showed the reoperation rate was almost twice as high in patients older than 65 years who underwent osteosynthesis for femoral neck fractures compared with those who had arthroplasty.

“For us, this was a striking finding and this association of increased risk of reoperation at 1, 2 and 3 years perhaps raises the question if we should be performing more arthroplasty in this age group of patients that had a femoral neck fracture,” Nicolas S. Piuzzi, MD, director of research for the Cleveland Clinic Adult Reconstruction Research Group, told Healio about results presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting.
