Key takeaways:

  • Early weight-bearing after dual-plate fixation of diaphyseal clavicle fractures may be safe and effective.
  • Researchers found no differences in union or reoperation rates between weight-bearing groups.

SAN FRANCISCO — Early weight-bearing after dual-plate fixation for mid-shaft diaphyseal clavicle fractures may be safe and effective, according to results presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting.

“The key takeaways here for this paper are, number one, that early weight-bearing after dual-plate fixation of diaphyseal clavicle fractures appears safe and effective, which is an important consideration in polytrauma patients who have concomitant lower-extremity fractures and may need to weight-bear through crutches or walkers,” Jack Twomey-Kozak, BS, a fourth-year medical student at Duke University, told Healio. “The second point is we challenge the dogma classically thought that you need strict sling immobilization after dual-plate fixation. I think this warrants reconsideration, and the current postoperative protocol is being reviewed right now.”
