“Receiving the AAOS Diversity Award means a lot to me. I have practiced academic medicine for many years, and I cannot think of any other accomplishment that I have found more meaningful,” Zelle said in the release. “Above all, I consider it a recognition of our combined efforts to support important values that I deeply believe in,” he said.

According to the release, Zelle regularly treats an underserved population of patients who face several challenges with limited access to health care. He has participated in various programs, initiatives and research studies aimed at addressing health care disparities in these vulnerable patient populations.

“While our research has brought important attention to some of these issues, the orthopedic community still has a long way to go,” he said. “AAOS remains a strong advocate of diversity efforts, and I feel honored and privileged to represent our orthopedic community,” Zelle concluded.
