Key takeaways:

  • Reimbursement for treating impending femur fractures dropped nearly 50% from 2000 to 2021.
  • The volume of prophylactic fixation procedures for femur fractures increased by nearly 200% during the same period.

SAN FRANCISCO — Despite an increase in the number of prophylactic fixation procedures of the femur performed among Medicare patients from 2000 to 2021, results showed the average reimbursement of this procedure decreased by nearly 50%.

“This data is important to demonstrate that we potentially need to increase the incentive to prophylactically treat [impending femur] fractures as opposed to allowing them to go on to completed fractures for these patients so we can assure adequate and best resources to maximize outcomes and care for these complex patients,” Jack M. Haglin, MD, MS, a third-year resident from the Mayo Clinic, told Healio about results presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting.
