Key takeaways:

  • Researchers developed a modified spinal instability neoplastic score to incorporate a neurologic impairment category.
  • Results showed a score of more than 12 points necessitated referral to a spine surgeon.

SAN FRANCISCO — Researchers developed a modified spinal instability neoplastic score that may enhance detection of unstable lesions that necessitate surgical intervention, according to results presented here.

“We determined that greater than 12 points on our modified [spinal instability neoplastic score] SINS score was the threshold to necessitate referral to a spine surgeon and ultimately, to slightly increase the referral base to make sure we are not missing lesions,” Hannah A. Levy, MD, told Healio about results presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting.

Peter S. Rose, MD, FAAOS, added that “the next steps are to potentially take this modified SINS score and externally validate it at other institutions to see if results are similar, in which case that might prompt consideration of change of clinical practice on a widespread basis.”
