WAILEA, Hawaii — At Orthopedics Today Hawaii, Richard W. McCalden, MD, spoke about the use of titanium tapered fluted stems for revision total hip arthroplasty surgery.

“I think the only issue now is just deciding whether to stick with the modular, which has been around the longest, or whether monoblock stems will be as successful. But there’s no question that, I think all of us agree, these stems made a huge difference, particularly in the more challenging defects where the previous implants were not as effective,” McCalden said.

McCalden said orthopedic surgeons have two options: whether to use modular vs. the new generation of monoblock stems.

“I’m a monoblock guy, but I don’t feel so strong that it’s the only option. I think that the most important thing is using that type of stem and having some expertise with it. And it can be effective in complex cases,” McCalden said.
