Key takeaways:

  • Shoulder and elbow procedures performed in an ASC had less costs and facility fees vs. a hospital outpatient department.
  • Savings for Medicare patients who underwent surgery in an ASC ranged from 32% to 46%.

SAN FRANCISCO — Results presented here showed shoulder and elbow procedures for Medicare patients performed at ASCs had greater cost savings compared with the same procedures performed at hospital outpatient departments.

“The significance of this is that there is a range anywhere from 32% to 46% savings for Medicare patients when they have their surgery done for shoulder and elbow procedures at ASCs as opposed to hospital outpatient departments,” Johnathan McCormick, MD, a PGY-4 at Rush University Medical Center, told Healio about results presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting. “Given the climate nowadays with cost savings, as well as financial pressures, we think that this is important for Medicare patients to know where it could be the potential best place for them to have their surgery.”
