Key takeaways:

  • MRI allows surgeons to visualize the meniscus, articular cartilage and ligament integrity.
  • Quantitative MRI is a noninvasive option for assessment of proteoglycan and collagen.

WAILEA, Hawaii — At Orthopedics Today Hawaii, Hollis G. Potter, MD, spoke about the use of MRI in assessment of meniscus, articular cartilage and ligament repair.

“Cartilage-sensitive pulse sequences have been in existence for 30 years, and you should have the anticipation that you have reliable and reproducible means to see articular cartilage injury and degeneration on [magnetic resonance] MR,” Potter said.

Potter said quantitative MR allows for noninvasive assessment of proteoglycan and collagen, the building blocks of cartilage.

“MR is the objective means by which to assess the repair success,” Potter said.
