Key takeaways:

  • Use of 3D-printed models in patellofemoral joint surgery is key for surgical planning of complex cases.
  • 3D visualization of patellofemoral joint anatomy may be an option after 2D imaging, such as CT and MRI.

In this video, Deepak Goyal, MBBS, MS(Ortho), DNB(Ortho), MNAMS, showed several examples of 3D-printed models for patellofemoral joint surgery and discussed the impact of 3D printing on surgical planning.

“When [3D printing] is needed, it gives you tremendous information, and it’s helpful in decision-making and surgical planning,” he said. “Believe me, at least 40% of my patients, whom I plan preoperatively on CT and MRI, and if I choose to get 3D printing done, their surgical plan changes. Since I started doing 3D printing, I have stopped doing many procedures. I don’t think that they are needed anymore or may be needed less often,” he added.
