WAILEA, Hawaii — At Orthopedics Today Hawaii, Bradford O. Parsons, MD, shared his tips for the diagnosis and treatment of subscapularis tears.
He said one key is not to miss subscapularis tears on the physical exam.
“You want to do that belly-press test. If the arm is weak when they try to hold their hand on the stomach, you want to make sure that arm stays good and strong,” Parsons said. “Look at the imaging and make sure you don’t see that bicep subluxated. That is a hallmark of subscap tears.”
Parson said that it is possible to fix subscapularis tears arthroscopically.
“Try to do smaller tears first to build your skillset. If it is a bigger tear and you are struggling, [there is] no harm in going open. You can easily do that from the deltopectoral approach,” Parsons said.
