VIDEO: Surgeon reviews factors to consider in MCL surgery when combined with ACL injury

Key takeaways:

  • Be aware of distal avulsions when planning surgery.
  • Leave proximal lesions alone.
  • Consider bracing for nonoperative treatment.

WAILEA, Hawaii — At Orthopedics Today Hawaii, Robert T. Burks, MD, spoke about how and when orthopedic surgeons might consider MCL surgery when combined with an ACL injury.

“I think the consensus would say that ‘yes,’ [as] those distal avulsions primarily are the things that people would think about adding at the time of injury and surgery. And the more proximal lesions, we would leave alone,” Burks said.

He said there is a role of bracing in the considerations.

“Protect them and then say, “Alright, they could get by, maybe, without the surgery.’ But the ones that we are going to operate [on] at the time of ACL, it’s a good idea with a distal injury to consider it,” Burks said.
