SEATTLE — In this video from the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Annual Meeting, Richard S. Yoon, MD, FAAOS, and Michael A. Maceroli, MD, discussed treating acetabular fractures in older patients.
Maceroli said acetabular fractures in older patients are becoming more common and can be challenging to treat. At the meeting, presenters discussed how osteoporosis can affect the management of older patients with acetabular fractures and the implants and strategies surgeons can employ in treatment of these patients.
“[We also will discuss] the clinical or technique aspects of whether to fix it, whether to replace it and how to make those decisions; then finally, the combined pelvic ring and acetabular fracture in the geriatric patient which, ultimately, the strategy is just do not let them pass away,” Maceroli said. “You have to be safe.”
“A lot of us traumatologists are wearing multiple hats when it comes to treating these [patients], and we are excited about pushing the field, innovating and learning new techniques and ways to help take care of our patients,” Yoon added.
