The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has released its fourth annual report on data from procedures reported in the AAOS Shoulder & Elbow Registry, according to a press release.
The report includes data from 25,192 shoulder and elbow procedures performed between 2015 and 2022, and includes findings on 23,680 patients, 424 surgeons and 82 facilities. Among 13,969 shoulder arthroplasty procedures included in the report, 17% were performed for rotator cuff tears. According to the report, most patients who underwent rotator cuff repair had an arthroscopic procedure. The report also noted 70% of rotator cuff repairs included concurrent subacromial decompression.
Additionally, the report included analysis of the two highest-volume patient-reported outcome tools: the Veterans Rand 12-item Health Survey and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score.
“The Shoulder & Elbow Registry experienced tremendous growth in the last year. From maintenance of certification credits to practice benchmarking, the participant benefits continue to expand,” Grant E. Garrigues, MD, FAAOS, chair of the steering committee for the registry, said in the release. “In addition, there continues to be an ongoing interest and great opportunity to leverage data collection to deliver the highest-quality musculoskeletal care to our patients,” Garrigues added.
