Key takeaways:
- Anatomic shoulder arthroplasty with an augmented glenoid component may restore the native joint line.
- Anatomic shoulder arthroplasty may be preferred over reverse arthroplasty for patients with glenoid wear.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — In this video from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Annual Meeting, T. Bradley Edwards, MD, discussed the use of anatomic shoulder arthroplasty with an augmented glenoid component for patients with glenoid wear.
“There’s been a big fascination with using the reverse [shoulder arthroplasty technique] for just about any patient with posterior glenoid wear, and with that, we’ve kind of gotten away from anatomic arthroplasty,” he said.
“In my mind, anatomic arthroplasty done well still gives a better clinical result than a reverse prothesis. So, we started asking ourselves: Is it possible to restore the patient’s normal joint line with an augmented glenoid component?” Edwards added.
