THOROFARE, N.J. — We are deeply saddened by the devastating and deadly impact of the wildfires that swept through the island of Maui in Hawaii a month ago.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy, including the many friends and colleagues on the island we have come to know through more than 15 years of the Orthopedics Today Hawaii meeting. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to those grappling with so much loss in the aftermath of the disaster.
To assist those in need, the Wyanoke Group has donated $10,000 to the Hawaii Community Foundation on behalf of Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2024. The foundation and Aloha United Way are agencies recommended to us by Sen. Mazie K. Hirono, D-Hawaii, and are mobilizing resources to assist with disaster response and recovery. We will also be fundraising onsite in Maui for those who plan to attend Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2024.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green said in a press conference on the recovery efforts that aside from West Maui, the rest of Maui and the other islands are safe to visit, and he encouraged people to travel to the state.
It is important we keep tourism functioning throughout other areas of Maui in the wake of the devastating wildfires West Maui has endured. Keeping the economy strong is the best way we can help Maui residents. Many families depend on tourism dollars to make a living, and visiting this winter will give residents the means and ability to rebuild their lives and communities.
“Supporting recovery efforts in Lahaina requires a variety of critical efforts. Many resources are being directed toward restoring homes, buildings and the community. Unfortunately, there is no recovery for the loss of family and neighbors that will impact this area forever. Lahaina was once the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii and has deep cultural and spiritual ties to the entire Hawaiian way of life,” Anthony A. Romeo, MD, Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2024 Program Director, said. “Rebuilding the community, culture, history and environment is essential to the entire Hawaiian family, including the many tourists who come regularly to enjoy the beauty of this island. We can best support their efforts through financial contributions, as we have initiated with a donation to the Hawaii Community Foundation, as well as keeping our commitment as tourists to visit the island and contribute to an essential economic driver of Hawaii’s prosperity. I look forward to seeing you at Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2024 at the Grand Wailea Hotel, located in the Wailea-Makena region of West Maui, which was fortunately spared the devastation. Your presence and participation in the tourism of Hawaii will help support the restoration and development of an even more beautiful and resilient part of our world.”
Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2024 will be held January 7 to 11 at the Grand Wailea in Maui. We look forward to hosting more than 700 attendees from all over the world this winter and will help give back to the island the meeting has called home for all these years.
“My family and I have had a home in the islands since 2008 and have fallen in love with the people and culture of this beautiful paradise. We were on the Big Island during the fire. Seeing ashes from Lahaina in our driveway was a sad reminder of the devastation,” Douglas A. Dennis, MD, Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2024 faculty member, said. “We have closely followed all that has been done since the event. So much help is needed, and it is exciting to see how the native Hawaiians have bonded together to help each other. I encourage all of you to consider joining us for Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2024 at the Grand Wailea in West Maui as tourism will help us rebuild our beautiful city.”
