Key takeaways:

  • Plate and screw constructs can be effective in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta.
  • Fracture rates following plate and screw constructs are similar to rates in intramedullary rodding without supplementation.

In this video, Jeanne M. Franzone, MD, discussed results that showed supplemental plate and screw constructs can be effective in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta undergoing intramedullary rodding.

“This does not need to be applied certainly in all cases, but in cases where we do need that rotational stability or to help a nonunion heal, these supplemental plate and screw constructs can be effective,” Franzone, pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, told Healio about results presented at the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America Annual Meeting.

She continued, “We look at this as part of our bigger body of work to push forward the surgical care of [osteogenesis imperfecta (OI)] patients. Where we look to take this in the future is adding more patient reported outcomes and really looking at this with some of our larger, both national and international, OI study groups.”
