Key takeaways:

  • Patients with a history of COVID-19 have increased risk for venous thromboembolism after total joint arthroplasty.
  • These patients should be “thoughtfully” optimized prior to surgery.

LAS VEGAS — In this video from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Brett Hayden, MD, discussed the risk profiles for venous thromboembolism after total joint arthroplasty in patients with a history of COVID-19.

“Those patients who have a history of COVID-19 infection have a significantly increased risk of VTE, particularly pulmonary embolism, after multivariate analysis,” Hayden said. “Those patients who have a history of COVID-19 infection should be thoughtfully optimized prior to undergoing total hip and total knee replacement with specific attention to their risk profile for [deep vein thrombosis] and PE prior to surgery,” he added.
