DALLAS — In this video from the Orthopaedic Research Society Annual Meeting, Matthew G. Teeter, PhD, spoke about the potential impact of metal ion exposure from total hip arthroplasty on the brain using evidence from quantitative MRI.

“We found no difference between our implanted subjects and our control subjects in any brain regions that we examined for differences in susceptibility [or] differences in potential ion deposition,” he said. “If there are patients who have implants which maybe have been recalled from the market but they’re still well-functioning at long-term follow-up and have no other symptoms, chances are their brains are still in good condition and that should not be a consideration or a worry for the surgeons or for the patients,” Teeter added.
