KOLOA, Hawaii — In this video from Orthopedics Today Hawaii, Richard W. McCalden, MD, spoke about routinely resurfacing the patella when performing total knee replacement.

“One thing that has been become my little passion, I suppose, is whether we should routinely be resurfacing the patella. I feel strongly that is the way to go. I have always done that in my practice, and I think it has worked out well. But more importantly, there is good evidence to show that,” he said.

McCalden said registry data, prospective randomized controlled trials and meta-analysis outcome studies have shown that patella resurfacing leads to a lower revision rate and generally happier patients.

“It has to be done technically well though. That is one of the other take-home messages. You have to use a good technique using an implant that has a good track record,” McCalden said.
