GRAPEVINE, Texas —  The American Joint Replacement Registry released its 2022 report on Nov. 4, which included procedural trends and patient outcomes, according to a press release.

The report, which is the ninth annual report of the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR), demonstrates an overall cumulative procedural volume growth of 14% compared with the previous year. In addition, the report includes data for more than 2.8 million hip and knee procedures since 2012 performed at more than 1,250 U.S. hospitals, ASCs and private practice groups that submit data, according to the release.

Data were derived from Springer BD. AJRR update. Presented at: American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting; Nov. 3-6, 2022; Grapevine, Texas.

In a presentation at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting, Bryan D. Springer, MD, FAAOS, who is chair of the AJRR Steering Committee said, “the American Joint Replacement Registry is the official registry of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. It is your registry and so we want you to be involved with the registry, submitting data using the registry for your research projects.”

The AJRR registry contains data for more than 2.8 million procedures, he said. “We are capturing about 40% of all hip and knee replacements that are done in the United States,” he said.

Springer encouraged orthopedic surgeons to download a copy of the 2022 AJRR annual report from the AJRR website.

“The 2022 annual report now contains information, demographics, trends [and]cumulative percent survivorship on many different types of hip and knee implants on over 2.5 million patients that are in the arthroplasty [registry], making it, procedurally, the largest total joint registry in the world,” Springer said, noting the report has many reuse opportunities that include surgeon dashboards for physicians who submit to the AJRR.

“You can use the AJRR as a vehicle to submit your information for bundled care payments because we are a qualified clinical data registry,” he said.

“Because this is your registry, you have the opportunity to utilize these data through the registry analytics institute,” Springer said.

According to the press release, other notable highlights of the 2022 report included the following:

  • Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are increasingly being utilized to evaluate success of a hip or knee arthroplasty procedure. Through continued support of the RegistryInsights PROMs platform and partnerships with third-party vendors, AJRR has experienced substantial growth in PROMs capture. By the end of 2021, more than 400 participating sites submitted PROMs, which is a 38% increase compared with the previous year.
  • For the first time this year, age-stratified patient-reported outcome scores were evaluated. Patients older than 75 years were found to have poorer scores compared to younger groups, most notably on the PROMIS-10 quality of life assessment tool.
  • ASCs played an increasingly important role in the delivery of total joint arthroplasty care in the U.S. The number of procedures submitted by ASCs has grown exponentially between 2012 and 2020 and has increased by 57% since the 2021 AJRR Annual Report.
  • Trends in the utilization of technology in total knee arthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty were a new addition to this report. Utilization of robotics in TKA has increased more than sixfold and more than doubled in THA since 2017. Computer navigation use has remained relatively stable.
