The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has released its third annual report on data from procedures performed in the AAOS Shoulder and Elbow Registry, according to a press release.
The registry includes data compiled from 17,617 shoulder and elbow procedures from 140 U.S. hospitals, private practices and ASCs between 2015 and 2021. According to the release, the registry tracks shoulder and elbow procedural trends, revisions and best practices.
The report highlights findings on several common orthopedic shoulder and elbow procedures, including the following:
- Of the 10,302 total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) procedures included in the report, 52.23% (n = 5,380) were reverse TSA.
- The most frequent diagnoses for both TSA and revision TSA procedures were osteoarthritis and rotator cuff tears.
- Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (RCR) was the most common RCR technique (n = 3,974), followed by other open shoulder procedures (n = 2,460), open RCR (n = 210) and open RCR with acromioplasty (n = 179).
