QUEBEC CITY — In this video from the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Annual Meeting, Gregory C. Berlet, MD, FRCS(C) FAOA, spoke on cyst formation in patients with fully porous-coated stemmed tibial implants.

“The discussion really is around: Why did these cysts form? There are theories like: This could be osteolysis from poly disease. It could be stress shielding from the bone bonding at the top of the stem, and then the bone beneath not filling the load. It could be the way it’s reamed,” Berlet said. “As our stemmed implants are lasting longer, here are some things we might want you to watch for. Maybe the porous-[coated implant] has something to do with it; maybe it doesn’t. But this is really a success story.”
