University of Pittsburgh announces new chair of orthopedics

The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine announced MaCalus V. Hogan, MD, MBA, as its new David Silver Professor and chair of the department of orthopedic surgery, according to a press release.
Hogan was also announced as the chair of orthopedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).
“The appointment of an individual to replace the ‘irreplaceable’ Dr. Freddie Fu is a decision that required great consideration. After a lengthy and deliberate selection process, Dr. Hogan was clearly the preferred choice to not only build upon Dr. Fu’s legacy, but also lead the department into new territories for the future,” Anantha Shekhar, MD, PhD, senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and John and Gertrude Petersen Dean of the school of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, said in the release. “His commitment to building a diverse environment at Pitt/UPMC and growing the academic excellence in musculoskeletal research made him the ideal next chair.”
Recruited to the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC by Fu in 2013, Hogan has served as the chief of foot and ankle surgery, vice chair of education and residency program director in the department of orthopedic surgery at UPMC, according to the release. A professor of orthopedic surgery with secondary appointments in the department of bioengineering and the Katz School of Business, Hogan was the founder and director of the Foot and Ankle Injury Research group in the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.
Hogan serves as a foot and ankle consultant for the athletic departments at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University and Robert Morris University, as well as for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins. Hogan is also the assistant team physician for Point Park University, including the Conservatory of Performing Arts, and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, according to the release.
Hogan is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association and the Orthopaedic Research Society, among other national organizations, and serves on the board of directors for the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society. The author of more than 250 manuscripts, book chapters and abstracts, Hogan frequently presents nationally and internationally on the management of foot and ankle injuries, regenerative bioengineering, clinical outcomes research and health care delivery transformation.
