Zimmer Biomet Holdings Inc. and Hospital for Special Surgery have announced the creation of an innovation center for artificial intelligence in robotic-assisted total joint replacement, according to a press release.
The collaborative efforts of Zimmer Biomet and Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) aim to develop innovative artificial intelligence (AI) support tools, data collection and machine learning technologies to improve decision-making during robotic TJR procedures, according to the release.
“Forging a multi-year collaboration with a leading orthopedics institution combines HSS’ clinical expertise with Zimmer Biomet’s expertise in surgical robotics and AI modeling,” Ivan Tornos, chief operating officer at Zimmer Biomet, said in the release.
This is the second time in 2 years that the medical technology company and academic medical center have collaborated.
“As a world leader in orthopedics, we strive to find opportunities to innovate towards improving patient care,” Michael P. Ast, MD, chief medical innovation officer at HSS, said in the release. “Leveraging data analytics and AI in this collaboration could enable us to improve clinical results in robotic-assisted joint replacement surgeries.”
