ZimVie receives positive policy decision for anterior vertebral body tethering device

ZimVie Inc. has announced a positive medical policy decision from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield for its anterior vertebral body tethering device for the treatment of pediatric scoliosis, according to a ZimVie press release.
Effective July 6, 2022, the Tether device by ZimVie has expanded eligibility for patients indicated for anterior vertebral body tethering (AVBT) under Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) coverage, according to the release.
“This decision marks a significant win for Anthem BCBS patients and the broader pediatric scoliosis community,” Rebecca Whitney, president of ZimVie Spine, said in the release. “Before the development of AVBT, the primary surgical option for children with scoliosis was a spinal fusion with rigid rods that could limit mobility. The coverage decision from Anthem will provide children with greater access to AVBT as a motion-preserving alternative that may allow them to return to their active daily lives. We hope that this decision also paves the way for policy updates from additional payers to positively impact the lives of children with scoliosis,” Whitney added.
