Claudette M. Lajam, MD, FAAOS, named chair of AAOS Board of Councilors

Claudette M. Lajam, MD, FAAOS was named chair of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Board of Councilors at the AAOS Annual Meeting, according to a press release.

Lajam, a first-generation Dominican American, is the first Latina chair of the AAOS Board of Councilors, and the second woman to serve in the role, according to the release.

Lajam, is a “leader in the field, dedicated to all aspects of clinical excellence, and a champion for underserved patient populations,” according to the release. She is an associate professor of orthopedic surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She received her medical degree from Cornell University and completed her residency training at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota.

Lajam was honored as "Advocate of the Year" in 2019 by the New York State Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons for her work in pushing health equity initiatives. She has volunteered on medical missions to the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Haiti, and serves on the Central Board of Operation WALK, a humanitarian organization that performs total joint replacements at no cost to residents of developing countries.

According to the release, Lajam is the only woman to be named to the OrthoPAC Hall of Fame. She is the past president of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society and has served on the Political Action Committee of the AAOS.
