AAOS issues guideline for surgical site infection prevention after major extremity trauma

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons released a clinical practice guideline and appropriate use criteria to help clinicians prevent surgical site infection in adults with major extremity trauma, according to a press release.
The clinical practice guideline (CPG) includes several recommendations for preoperative, perioperative and postoperative interventions for surgical site infection (SSI) after open fracture, major, high-energy closed fracture, degloving injury, Morel lesions, gunshot injuries, crush injuries, blast injuries and high-energy force injuries. According to the release, the guidelines also cover incisional negative pressure wound therapy, implementation of an orthoplastic team, use of hyperbaric oxygen and skin preparation.
The appropriate use criteria (AUC) offer health care professionals an algorithm for evaluating and treating patients who present with high-energy extremity trauma. According to the release, these AUC only apply to patients who present without the presence of SSI at the extremity trauma site.
