CHICAGO — In this video from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Charla R. Fischer, MD, discussed the outcomes of implementing a multidisciplinary high-risk case conference for patients with spinal deformity.

“We have instituted a multidisciplinary conference to review our highest-risk spine cases,” Fischer, associate professor of orthopedic surgery at NYU Langone Health, told Healio. “These are adult spinal deformity cases, fusion levels greater than eight, severe kyphosis or scoliosis greater than 75°, if it’s an anterior lumbar revision surgery, [or] severe myelopathy with significant stenosis.”

Fischer noted patients who were included in the multidisciplinary conference group had significant improvements in quality and patient safety metrics compared with patients in the pre-conference cohort. Patients in the multidisciplinary conference group had decreased intraoperative and postoperative complications, as well as decreased 30- and 90-day readmission and reoperation rates, according to Fischer.

“We feel that having a multidisciplinary conference for these complex spinal deformity patients is important and we think that it’s something that has enhanced our quality and patient safety efforts at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital,” Fischer said.
