Value-based care conference to focus on future of orthopedics

Featuring presenters from multiple disciplines and three interactive tracks, the Interdisciplinary Conference on Orthopedic Value-Based Care aims to explore the financial, clinical and operational aspects of the future of orthopedics.

“We decided this year to expand our offerings and not only talk about issues that are related to value-based care but expand and talk about the future of orthopedic practice,” Zeev N. Kain, MD, MBA, president of the American College of Perioperative Medicine and Chancellor’s Professor at the University of California, told Healio.

Future of orthopedics

Being held from April 29 to April 30 in Newport Beach, California, the meeting will begin with a panel focusing on the shaping of surgical innovation in the future of orthopedics, according to Kain. Other lectures during the meeting will focus on private equity, medical device predictions, robotics and same-day surgery.

Kain added sessions during the meeting will also focus specifically on the treatment of OA.

“It starts with talking about the condition-based bundle, then moves to nonoperative and then operative treatment options for osteoarthritis before moving to the future about gene therapy, and then to the management panel,” Kain said. “So, it is an entire afternoon that is focused on osteoarthritis.”

Kain said the decision to have sessions focus on the treatment of OA stemmed from the desire to highlight all aspects of patient care, as well as integrate all the members of the patient care team at the meeting.

“When we thought about that we said, ‘What’s the most common orthopedic disease?’ Well, it’s osteoarthritis, there is just no question about it,” he said. “So, that’s how we came around the economical models of osteoarthritis, the treatment for osteoarthritis and, of course, the future of the treatments of osteoarthritis just to cover the entire spectrum in one session.”

Concurrent sessions

While much of the meeting brings attendees together to discuss and focus on a specific topic, it also provides attendees with the chance to take a deeper dive into the financial, operational or clinical aspects of value-based care with concurrent sessions, according to Kevin Bozic, MD, conference activity co-director and chair of the department of surgery and perioperative care at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin.

“There are plenary sessions that bring everyone together but for this type of meeting, where the content is not primarily clinically focused, you will see that not everyone would be interested in every topic,” Bozic told Healio. “When you have breakout sessions that are targeted toward the individual groups and stakeholders, it allows people to get the interaction in the plenary session from all the different perspectives but then go a little deeper with their own expertise in the breakout sessions.”

In addition, Bozic said the meeting will host ample opportunities for attendees to interact and network with the panelists and speakers.

“Anyone preparing to go should prepare their questions, look over the agenda, figure out who they want to speak with and either ask their questions during the open mic and Q&A or find the speakers at the break or the breakouts,” Bozic said. “Everyone is approachable, and everyone shares the same goal of helping people make the transition to value.”
