Kinex Medical has released a market report on the future of postoperative recovery and telerehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty, featuring insight from 189 surgeons, leaders and hospital executives, according to a press release.

The market report addresses recent challenges facing orthopedic providers and their ability to deliver value-based care and innovation in recovery after TKA. According to the report, surgeons and providers are faced with COVID-19 pandemic safety concerns, increasing surgical volumes, an inability to track and monitor patient recovery, difficulty managing and containing episodic costs, a need for timely interventions and a desire to reduce readmissions. These challenges led to two strategic priorities for orthopedic providers in 2022: improving patient satisfaction (49.7% of respondents in the market survey) and improving quality of care (49.2% of respondents).

The report included the following other notable developments from responses in the market survey:

  • 87% of surgeons reported that telerehabilitation is the future of recovery;
  • 62% of orthopedic surgeons would like to encourage telerehabilitation for their patients;
  • more than 80% of surgeons listed "improving clinical outcomes" as their highest near-term priority;
  • fewer than 15% of respondents reported having the capability to perform remote objective assessments; and
  • 84% of providers rely on patient-reported outcomes to track recovery.

“As TKA surgical volumes spike and the site of care continues its shift to outpatient settings, we'll continue to see the need for telerehabilitation to grow,” Mike Buckholdt, president of Kinex Medical, said in the release. “Care providers need a way to monitor and manage their patients' recovery journeys in a cost-effective, clinically equivalent way. The new class of postoperative recovery devices empower providers, patients and payers looking for new ways to deliver unparalleled quality and a stellar patient experience at a reduced cost.”
