Smith & Nephew has introduced its Legion Conceloc Cementless Total Knee System and the first completed surgical procedures with the device, according to a company press release.

Conceloc Advanced Porous Titanium is a patented 3D-printed technology initially launched in 2016 for use in Smith & Nephew’s Redapt Revision Hip System. The device is created in a computer program and “manufactured through 3D printing additive manufacturing to optimize its porous structure to promote bony ingrowth,” according to the release.

A modern cementless knee implant, the Legion Conceloc combines the Conceloc technology with the Legion knee implant to provide “better long-term fixation through biologic integration, shorter operating times” and the move to ASCs, according to the release.

“Legion Conceloc addresses the critical elements of the cementless total knee through its unique design,” Mathias P. Bostrom, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery and one of the designing surgeons for the system, said in the release. “The asymmetrical keel is designed to help achieve immediate bone fixation, while the patented 3D-printed structure of Conceloc encourages biological ingrowth. I'm excited for how this technology may lead to improved operating room efficiency while eliminating many of the past and current challenges of cementless knee designs."

The system is available in North America.

“The launch of Legion Conceloc enables Smith & Nephew to enter a rapidly growing market in cementless knees,” Skip Kiil, president of global orthopedics at Smith & Nephew, said in the release. “This proven technology allows us to leverage great clinical results of LEGION, modern 3D printing technology, our Real Intelligence technology suite and new streamlined SYNC Performance Instruments to provide an economic solution that removes cement costs and time to knee procedures.”
