SAN DIEGO — In this video from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Henry B. Ellis Jr., MD, discussed how suspension of sport participation due to the COVID-19 pandemic affected youth athletes.
“During the COVID epidemic and social restrictions, virtual training was successful as teams continued to train and interact regularly. Sports specialization continues to be highlighted as a concern for youth athletes from a mental health standpoint during periods of an epidemic when their normal routines get affected,” Ellis said. “I would also say that we highlighted that healthy habits – including sleep, mental well-being and optimal practice schedules, including spending time outside – continue to be reinforced, and educate parents and coaches as we continue to work on health and safe habits for the developing youth athlete.”
