Benjamin ‘Kyle’ Potter, MD, FACS, selected as surgery chair of US military medical school

Army Colonel Benjamin “Kyle” Potter, MD, FACS, an orthopedic oncology specialist, has been selected to serve as chair of the department of surgery at Uniformed Services University’s Hebert School of Medicine, according to a press release.
Potter is a professor in the surgery and physical medicine and rehabilitation departments at the Uniformed Services University (USU), as well as the orthopedic surgery consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General. He also serves as musculoskeletal oncology consultant, director for surgery and chief orthopedic surgeon for the amputee program at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
“Dr. Potter is an exceptional choice for chair of USU’s Department of Surgery. He is a world-class surgeon who has personally cared for thousands of injured service members, including hundreds of combat-injured amputees,” Richard Thomas, MD, DDS, president of USU, said in the release. “He is also a bold innovator and critical thinker with outstanding academic and research credentials, perfectly suited to lead the department into the future,” Thomas added.
“It is the honor of both my military and medical careers to have been selected as the next chair of USU-Walter Reed Department of Surgery,” Potter said in the release. Potter said he will carry on the legacy established by Army Colonel Norman M. Rich, MD, FACS, DMCC, MC, and advanced by former chair and newly appointed dean Eric A. Elster, MD, by “prioritizing USU undergraduate and graduate education, military-relevant research and surgical training, and readiness advances locally, nationally and globally.”
Potter’s new position as chair of the USU’s Department of Surgery will go into effect in August of 2021.
