Surgical Planning Associates receives FDA clearance of augmented reality platform for THA
Surgical Planning Associates has announced FDA 501(k) clearance of its HipInsight system, an augmented reality-based, digital surgery platform for total hip arthroplasty, according to a press release.
The system offers an augmented-reality option for preoperative planning and intraoperative guidance, which allows the surgeon to visualize anatomy, instruments and implants in real time and perform the procedure with precision and efficiency, according to the release.
“Traditional navigation systems, robotics and interoperative imaging provide information on flat screens outside the surgeon’s view of the patient, leaving the process disjointed and awkward,” Stephen B. Murphy, MD, an orthopedic hip and knee specialist who performed the first THA with the platform, said in the release. “The HipInsight system enables surgeons to stay focused on the patient, projecting holograms on AR glasses that effectively give them ‘X-ray vision,’ so that surgeons can see what they need to see, when they need to see it, right inside the patient’s body,” he said.
“It's amazing to be able to actually see the entire bony anatomy, implants and instruments inside the patient while you're operating,” Daniel M. Ward, MD, orthopedic surgeon who assisted Murphy with the surgery, said in the release. “This is the kind of technology surgeons have been striving for – when you try it for the first time, it's just a mind-blowing experience.”
