The European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology exam is a specialist exam in trauma and orthopaedics.

For the last 18 years, it has been run in different European countries with the aim to improve the standard of knowledge and professional competence of surgeons. The exam is open to certified specialists from Europe and trainees in their final year of training in a recognized European training scheme program, as well as non-EU citizen working in an EU country.

EFORT

This year, the global COVID-19 pandemic forced the difficult decision to be made to postpone the 2020 European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EBOT) exam to 2021 and cancel the interim exam, which was supposed to take place in March this year.

To foster the harmonization and quality of education and improve orthopaedic training throughout Europe, which is our aim, the EBOT Examination Committee decided to organize an EBOT interim exam in fall of this year. This is scheduled for Thursday, 22 October 2020 from 10:00 to 13:00 CET.

With the help of the interim exam, the heads of training of the participating hospitals are able to gather information about the performance of their different residents and compare them at the European level. The interim exam can also serve as a trial exam for all those candidates who wish to take the final exam.

Hospitals that are interested to register and to participate are asked to contact the EBOT administrator at ebotexam@efort.org.

Candidates can register directly through the registration platform available at www.ebotexam.org/interim, provided that their hospital is already registered for the event. In case a hospital is not yet registered, please also contact the EBOT administrator at ebotexam@efort.org to enquire about the process.

Finally, we would like to advise everyone about the 2021 EBOT exam dates, which are as follows:

  • written part: Tuesday 15 June 2021 from 10:00 to 13:00 CET in different test centers in Europe and the world; and
  • oral part in English: Saturday and Sunday 2 and 3 October 2021, in Brussels.

Prior to being admitted to the oral part of the EBOT exam, all candidates have to apply and successfully sit section I of the exam, which is the written section (in English).

Application for the 2021 EBOT exam will open in December 2020. All information will also be available through the EBOT website at www.ebotexam.org.
