3D printing technique was safe and effective in assisting distal radius fracture care

A 3D printing technique can safely and effectively facilitate the surgical treatment of intra-articular distal radius fractures, according to published results.
From February 2017 to November 2018, researchers analyzed 32 patients with intra-articular distal radius fractures and randomly assigned them to two parallel groups: a group that was assisted with 3D printing and a routine group. Both groups were treated with volar plate and K-wire fixation, according to the study.
After comparing intraoperative indexes and postoperative function between the groups, researchers found operation time, intraoperative bleeding and times of intraoperative uoroscopy were reduced when assisted by the 3D printing model. The investigators found no significant differences between the groups regarding VAS scores, DASH scores and active range of wrist motion.
“[A] 3D printing technique can help to optimize the surgical procedure before operation and improve the accuracy and safety of K-wire implantation, which simplify the surgical procedures and save more time,” the researchers wrote in the study. “This technique is safe and effective, and is worth spreading in other orthopedic surgeries,” they added.
