The EBOT Exam is a specialist exam in trauma and orthopaedics. For the last 18 years, it has been run in different European countries with the aim to improve the standard of knowledge and professional competence of surgeons.
The EBOT Exam is not mandatory, as all European residents can choose to take their national examination, should such an examination exist. National exams are managed by the orthopaedic association in each country and administered in the local language. A final examination in the specialty is not universal and this, in turn, generates an increase in the variation regarding the assessment done in each country. However, the EBOT exam tests the generality of orthopaedics and trauma knowledge based on the syllabus of the European curriculum as endorsed by both European Union of Medical Specialists or UEMS and EFORT in 2015.
The exam is open to certified specialists from Europe and trainees in their final year of training in a recognized European training scheme program. as well as non-EU citizens who work in an EU country.
The dates for the 2020 EBOT (final) Exam are as follows:
Written part: Wednesday 17 June 2020 from 10:00 to 13:00 CET
Oral part in English: Saturday and Sunday, 3 and 4 October 2020 in Brussels, Belgium
For 4 consecutive years now, the oral part of the EBOT Exam is also offered in the Spanish language for Spanish residents, which is subject to and in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SECOT).
Oral part in Spanish: Saturday and Sunday, 20 and 21 November 2020 in Madrid, Spain
Prior to being admitted to the oral part, all candidates will have to apply and successfully sit section I, the written section (in English), of the exam.
Application is now open until 20 March 2020 through the EBOT website.

EBOT Interim Exam
Since 2011, The European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology is also organizing the EBOT Interim Exam, an annual assessment of all European orthopaedic trainees. With the help of the EBOT Interim Exam, the heads of training of the participating hospitals are able to gather information about the performance of the different residents and compare them at the European level.
This year’s EBOT Interim Exam will take place on Friday 20 March 2020 from 10:00 to 13:00 CET and registration for both hospitals and candidates is now open. Hospitals that wish to register and participate are asked to contact the EBOT administrator at ebotexam@efort.org.
Candidates can register directly through the registration platform available through www.ebotexam.org/interim, provided that their hospital is already registered for the event. Please be advised the date for 2021 Interim Exam is Tuesday 23 March 2021.
