Different osteotomy types, graft sites had similar stability outcomes
Published results showed similar outcomes in regard to strength and stability among different subtrochanteric osteotomy types and graft sites.
Researchers recorded the failure values for axial and rotational loadings of 63 composite femurs that underwent transverse osteotomy, oblique osteotomy or step-cut osteotomy. Researchers also divided the femur sawbones into anteroposterior, mediolateral and anterolateral subgroups based on the graft positions.
When the graft was positioned anteroposteriorly, mediolaterally and anterolaterally, results showed no statistically significant differences among the types of osteotomy. Researchers also found no statistically significant differences among the types of osteotomy and graft positions among and within each group.
“As a conclusion, due to lack of superiority among the existing techniques, it is suggested that the preferable method is the one that is the easiest to be performed and in which the surgeon is most experienced,” the authors wrote. – by Casey Tingle
