LISBON, Portugal — An analysis of about 14,500 patients in the National Joint Registry for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man showed the posterior approach for total hip replacement used in patients with displaced intracapsular hip fractures was linked with reduced mortality risk through the 5-year follow-up compared to matched patients who underwent THR with an anterior approach, Michael R. Whitehouse, PhD, FRCS Tr&Orth, of the National Institute for Health Research Bristol Biomedical Research Centre, said. The study, which won Whitehouse and his colleagues the Best Paper-Trauma Gold Award at the EFORT Annual Congress and was the largest investigation of its kind to date, also found no difference in risk of revision due to dislocation or periprosthetic fracture in the two groups.
