LISBON, Portugal — Repair of the anterolateral ligament in conjunction with ACL reconstruction may provide better functional outcomes, according to results presented at the EFORT Annual Congress.
Using Lysholm scores, modified Cincinnati scores, thigh atrophy value and one-leg hop test, Ali Turgot, MD, and colleagues evaluated 60 patients who underwent ACL reconstruction. A radiology specialist reviewed preoperative and postoperative MRIs to identify whether patients had an intact (n=28) or ruptured (n=32) anterolateral ligament.
Turgot noted patients with an intact anterolateral ligament who underwent ACL reconstruction had better Lysholm scores. He added modified Cincinnati scores and jump percentages were statistically significantly different between patients with vs. those without an intact anterolateral ligament.
“Thigh atrophies of the patients were evaluated as [a] statistically significant difference between the two groups also,” Turgot said in his presentation. – by Casey Tingle
