The Hip Society, The Knee Society acquire CCJR
The Hip Society and The Knee Society, in partnership, signed an agreement to acquire Current Concepts in Joint Replacement. The move is a culmination of feasibility study, due diligence and negotiations as well as the dedication of volunteer leaders appointed by both organizations to spearhead the project, according to a press release.
Created by A. Seth Greenwald, DPhil(Oxon), and presented by the Current Concepts Institute, the CCJR course has taken place each December and May and has attracted more than 3,000 delegates from more than 60 countries on an annual basis. The CCJR program includes an esteemed faculty, extensive exhibitor participation and a highly anticipated educational curriculum, according to the release.
“The meetings have become of global interest and it is a wonderful opportunity to gain exposure to contemporary joint replacement of the hip and knee … and it comes with the mantra of what is going on in joint replacement today, as well as reviews of what is working and what has not,” Greenwald told Healio.com/Orthopedics.
According to Douglas E. Padgett, MD, president of The Hip Society, collaborations will continue with Greenwald, who will remain director, and the Current Concepts Institute to expand the offerings of the CCJR program.
“Education has gone from pure, didactic lecture-based models to now more interactive, small-group breakout sessions and discussions,” Padgett told Healio.com/Orthopedics. “We certainly think there is an opportunity to start exploring those types of opportunities.”
Padgett added they hope to continue and expand relationships with international members and provide educational offerings overseas.
They are currently recruiting senior leaders interested in working closely with Greenwald and his team over the next 18 months to learn how to maintain and improve the CCJR program, Robert L. Barrack, MD, president of The Knee Society, noted. They also hope this transition will increase awareness and visibility of the mission of The Hip Society and The Knee Society.
“[This is] an opportunity to raise the visibility of the hip and knee societies and another way to attract bright, young surgeons who are going to be future leaders to maintain their interest and enthusiasm for the hip and knee societies,” Barrack told Healio.com/Orthopedics. “This will add another unique aspect in that most of the speakers and educators will be the thought leaders who are coming into these societies.” – by Casey Tingle
